The idea of radar was first started during late 1880s by a German physicist named Heinrich Hertz. It is believed that German inventor Christian Hansmeyer was the first to use radio waves in order to detect “presence of the distant metallic objects”. In the year 1904, he successfully demonstrated the feasibility of detecting a ship in intense fog. People believe that advent of radar, won the war for the allies during world war 2. It is very true that radar had a huge impact on world war 2 victory. During that time, the radar was very basic way of obtaining information. Well, from that to the current world, we utilize radar in every day life for various purposes. Traffic control, weather forecast, or onboard vehicle system, radars have been extensively used for everything.  In this blog, we study the types of radars, and understand why  radar sensor market is expecting huge growth. Let us understand the meaning of radar.

What is Radar?

Radar is a system which uses radio waves for finding out the position of moving objects such as planes, ships, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formation and terrain. Radar is an acronym for radio detection and ranging system.

Type of radar system: –

1-Detection and search radar

Search radars are able to scan huge volume of space area with short radio wave pulses. These waves are normally less than a meter long. The body of planes and ships is metallic and hence it reflects to radio waves.

2-Targeting radars

Targeting radars uses the same principle but they scan smaller volumes of space. There are missiles guidance systems in the military called Ait-to air missile (AAM), Air–to-surface missile (ASM), Surface-to-air missile (SAM), and Surface-to surface missiles.

3-Instrumentation radar

This kind of radar is used to test missiles, aircrafts, and munitions on private and government and private test ranges. These radars provide space, time, position, and information data for both real time and post processing analysis. Some examples of such radars in NASA are AN/FPS-16, MPA-25, FPS-14, etc.

4-Weather sensing radar systems

The weather sensing radars resembles with the search radars These radars utilize the radio waves along with horizontal, circular, and dual polarization. The frequency selection of the weather radar hampers because of the attenuation due to the atmospheric vapor. Few weather radar uses Doppler shift to measure the dual polarization and wind speeds for identification of types of precipitations.

5-Navigational radar

The navigational radar resembles search radar but use very short waves that reflect from the earth as well as stone. There are marine radars available which are used in ships to avoid collisions and navigation purposes.

6-Air traffic control and navigation

The air traffic control utilizes primary and secondary radars. The primary radars are classical radars which reflects all kinds of echoes, including clouds and aircrafts. The secondary radar emits pulses and attempts to listen to digital data being emitted by the Aircraft Transponder. Below are the few radars used in air traffic control and navigation:

-Air traffic control (ATC) radars

-Secondary surveillance radar(SSR)

-Ground control approach (GCA)

-Radio beacons

-Terrain-following radar (TFR) systems

7- Mapping radars

Mapping radars are utilized to scan a large region for geography and remote sensing application. A synthetic aperture radar is being used for normal as well as tough terrain.

8- Radar for biological research

Radar wavelength and range can be adapted for different surveys of insects and bird’s migration and following their daily habits.

Market synopsis:

The radar sensor market seize was valued at USD 11 billion in 2020 and is anticipated to reach USD 37 billion by the year 2030, by growing at a CAGR of 20% from 2021 to 2030. The growth can attribute to the myriad of uses of the radar sensor for various applications.
